I’m Leaving Here with Something

“I will not let you go unless you bless me.”

— Genesis 32:26

Every year, I choose a word, a phrase, or a mantra to carry with me—something that grounds me when life feels uncertain and fuels me when I’m aiming higher. One of those mantras this year has been: “I’m leaving here with something.”

The line comes from a viral clip of Jamie Foxx interviewing Denzel Washington. Denzel was reflecting on the 1988 Oscars, where he didn’t win Best Supporting Actor. Later that night, he saw a big tray of food being taken out for the Governor’s Ball—and he took it.

He wasn’t going to walk away empty-handed. Hence the now-famous line: “I’m leaving here with something.”

It was a simple statement, but it stuck with me. I’ve gone through too much—cried too many tears, fought too many silent battles—to walk away empty-handed.

I’m leaving here with something.

It reminds me of Jacob in the Bible. He wrestled all night with what he later realized was God. And when daybreak came, though wounded with a dislocated hip, he refused to let go until he was blessed. He literally said, “I will not let you go unless you bless me.” (Genesis 32:26) Jacob was determined to leave that fight with something. And he did. He walked away limping—but he also walked away with a new name, a new identity, and a generational blessing.

Too often, we endure the weight of our trials and come out with nothing but the limp. We carry the pain, the scars, the bruises… but leave the blessing behind. But if I’m going to limp, then I’m going to limp blessed.

I wonder how many of you are crazy enough to believe your fight isn’t for nothing.

I wonder how many of you will dare to say, “I’m not letting go until I get something out of this.”

This season may leave you changed.

It may leave you limping.

But don’t let it leave you empty.

If you’re going to go through it—get something out of it.

Because you deserve more than the wound.

You deserve the win.
