Pop Out, Pivot, and Apply Pressure: A Faith-Based Reflection on the Grammys

In the words of Kendrick Lamar, sometimes you have to pop out and show..... As you all know, the Grammys took place yesterday, and I am such a music girl. Especially when it comes to hip-hop, rap, and R&B—those genres have been my thing since I was a kid. I sometimes think I missed my calling to be a rapper (LOL, maybe in another life!).

But listen, as I was catching up on the highlights from the awards, I couldn’t help but think back to last year when Kendrick Lamar went head-to-head with one of my other favorite rappers—Drake. I was torn! The battle tracks were going back and forth, and I couldn’t decide who had the better verse. It was honestly stressful for me because I love them both so much. What made this so interesting, though, is that during this “beef,” it seemed like Kendrick wasn’t trying to fight at all. But Drake kept poking the bear. He continuously threw shots at Kendrick, and that’s something I can relate to.

I’m not a confrontational person, but there are moments when I’ve been pushed too far, and something inside of me just wakes up. And sometimes, that’s not a bad thing. In fact, sometimes, God uses that very push to awaken something in us that’s been lying dormant.

You know, we often blame the enemy for everything. “The enemy did this” or “The enemy did that.” But what if, sometimes, God allows the enemy to provoke us to wake up a strength within us that we didn’t know we had? To bring something out of us that we wouldn’t have discovered otherwise?

Looking back on 2024, I can honestly say it was a year of battle for me. A battle I never wanted, but a battle I had to fight. I faced so many challenges—feeling betrayed in my personal circles, struggling with the end of my marriage, and battling spiritual doubts. I often questioned my worth, thinking that because my marriage was falling apart, I had lost my anointing. It felt like one battle after another. But every time the enemy swung at me, it felt like God was using it to wake something up inside me.

Every attack, every word spoken against me, every moment of feeling defeated—it all stirred something in me that I didn’t know existed: a fight, a spark, a power I didn’t realize I had. And for that, I’m grateful.

So, what can we learn from the Grammys this year? There are a few lessons I’d like to share, not just from Kendrick Lamar, but also from Beyoncé.

1. Sometimes the fight awakens the winner in you. Kendrick Lamar’s Grammy success didn’t come out of nowhere. This man went from battling his peer, Drake, to performing at the Super Bowl and winning Grammy after Grammy. And all of that success is a byproduct of a fight he didn’t want to have. But once he started swinging, it turned out that it wasn’t just about beating Drake—it was about awakening an even greater version of himself. Just like in 1 Peter 5:10, we’re reminded, “And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm, and steadfast.”

2. Don’t be afraid to pivot. Beyoncé taught us an important lesson this year—don’t be afraid to pivot. She released her first country album and walked away with a Grammy for a genre she’d never ventured into before. Who does that?! Sometimes, we get so stuck in what we’ve always known, thinking that’s the only way to win. But the truth is, you can pivot and win in a new lane. You can start a new chapter, a new song, and still find success. “Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it?” (Isaiah 43:19)

3. Apply pressure. Both Kendrick Lamar and Beyoncé showed us that when you apply pressure, no matter what’s thrown your way, you’ll always end up on top. They didn’t let obstacles stop them. They didn’t let the hate or criticism derail their path. Instead, they applied pressure and rose to the occasion. “I can do all things through him who strengthens me.” (Philippians 4:13)

I don’t know if you watched the Grammys or if you’re into music, but what I do know is this: you all believe in God. You’ve been to a TEA Party or followed my content, so you know that I believe in God, too. And I want you to remember this: “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” (Romans 8:28)

Everything you’re going through is working for your good. Even the battles, the struggles, the hardships. Let it all work out in your favor.

Alright, y’all, welcome to February! Let’s pop out, pivot, and apply pressure this year!

Love, Peace, and TEA!

Ebony
